Review: Viana's Organic Cowgirl Veggie Steaks

|

I'm not the biggest fan of meat substitutes however Viana's Organic Cowgirl Veggie Steaks are one of the very few exceptions. They are certified organic, GMO-free and incredibly flavorful, spiced to perfection with a deliciuos combination of spices and seasonings.

Each 7.4 ox package contains two of these "steaks" which doesn't seem like a lot but let me tell you, these babies are filling! They also pack a hefty punch in the nutritional department. Each serving contains 29 grams of protein and 260 calories.

Unlike many of the stringy and chewy faux meats on the market Viana's Organic Cowgirl Veggie Steaks are juicy and flavorful. They are wonderful pan-fried, served with some steak sauce along with a side of vegetables or salad and can also be grilled on the barbecue.

Review: Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar Cookbook

|

So after Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero published the most fabulous cupcake cookbook, Vegan Cupcakes Take Over The World (and didn't they ever), I found myself wishing they would release a sequel. May I introduce, Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar.

Chock full of 100 of the best cookie recipes I've come across, this cookbook is fantastic! Although there is an entire chapter dedicated to "Wholesome Cookies" (the Applesauce Softies were devoured by my 3-year-old), many of the recipes are not for the calorie counting. Cookies such as Hazelnut Fudge Dreamies, Cranberry White Chocolate Biscotti, Peanut Butter Chocolate Pillows and Caramel Pecan Bars are rich and oh so dreamy.

There are also clones of your favorites such as Old-Fashioned Pie-Plate Shortbread, Linzertorte Thumbrint Cookies, Minonos, Lemon Bars and Blondies (with four variations).

I was hoping to take some pictures of the different cookies and bars I made over the holidays but unfortunately by the time I got around to it, they disappeared into thin air ;-).

The great thing about these recipes is the overall flavor and texture are not affected with the omitted eggs and dairy thus making them perfect for serving to omnivores. You don't have to be a vegetarian to enjoy this book!

Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar can by found online at Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble and Chapters Indigo or at most bookstores.

Thanks to Da Capo Press for providing us this book for review!

Review: Vega Whole Food Vibrancy Bars By Sequel Naturals

|

Recently we were given the opportunity to test out the newest addition to Vega's award-winning product line, the Whole Food Vibrancy Bars in Wholesome Original and Green Synergy (they are also available in Chocolate Decadence).

Like all of Vega's products these bars are all-natural, raw and organic. Unlike many of the power or sports bars on the market, Vibrancy bars are vegan, gluten-free, sprouted, alkaline-forming and rich in antioxidants, phytonutrients and Omega 3.

My husband and I enjoyed both of the bars however my 3-year-old daughter preferred the taste of the Wholesome Originals as it had more of a pleasant flavor whereas the Green Synergy tasted very "green". I will be purchasing a few for travel snacks as they are extremely healthy.

Each bar contains:

* 17.5g of sprouts, rich in enzymes and phytonutrients
* 10g of raw protein for easy digestion
* 4g of Omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids
* 5g of soluble and insoluble fibre (20% of RDI)

I love that these bars contain 0 refined sugar, soy, and are GMO and pesticide free. They make excellent snacks and are nutrient powerhouses!

These are available at most Health Food stores however if you are unable to find them where you are, check out Sequel Naturals to order online or to view a list of retailers in your area

Thanks to Sequel Naturals for providing us with a few samples of these bars for review!

Book Review: The No Cry Nap Solution by Elizabeth Pantley

|

Getting my 3-year-old daughter down for an afternoon nap has been like pulling teeth! As some of you already know, my daughter co-slept with us until she was around 18 months. When we transferred her to her own bed, there wasn't much fuss as I believe we were both ready at that point.

Unfortunately naps haven't been as simple. I looked at various parenting books trying to come to a solution however most of the parenting styles didn't mirror my own and I wasn't comfortable with many of the techniques.

Elizabeth Pantley
, mother of four and award winning author of the No-Cry Sleep Solution recently offered to send me a copy of her book, The No-Cry Nap Solution to review and I jumped at the opportunity .

This book was also the winner of Disney's iParenting Media Award for Best product!

Throughout this book, Elizabeth's gentle voice and formula suggestions are a pleasant change from the rigid parenting books I have read in the past. I can actually say this book was a pleasure to read! Tested by hundreds of families around the world, these tear-free suggestions are guaranteed to help you:
  • Convince any child to nap every day
  • Effortlessly settle your child for naptime in his or her own bed
  • Turn short, fitful naps into long, peaceful ones
  • Establish a nap schedule that works for you and your child
  • Easily adapt nap routines to your child's developing needs
  • Confidently deal with sudden changes, nap strikes, and travel
If your child has issues with nap time I highly recommend giving this book a try. It is a great reference tool full of simple and practical ideas!

Priced at $15.95 this book is available at Amazon.com or Chapters.ca.

Vega Vanilla Chai Whole Food Optimizer Review

|

In case you aren't familiar with Vega, it is an award winning protein powder/meal replacement made from all natural plant-based whole foods. Not only is it nutritionally complete but also very easy to digest and alkaline to your body!

The entire Vega line was formulated by Brendan Brazer a professional Ironman triathlete and best selling author.

Vega Facts:

* Packed with complete protein, 100% RDI of vitamins and minerals, fiber, Omega-3 and 6 EFAs, antioxidants, probiotics, enzymes, ChlorEssence and MacaSure.

* Free of animal products, dairy, gluten, soy, sugar, wheat, yeast artificial sweeteners, GMOs or pesticides Clean, green and alkaline-forming, Vega Whole Food Health Optimizer combines whole food goodness with fast food convenience.

* Every serving contains 11 grams of protein, only 3 grams of fat and 1 gram of Omega 3. Health factor - 10/10

* With only 100 calories, this nutritional powder sure packs a lot of nutrients into it's 30 g serving size. It has 11 g of protein, only 3 g of fat and 1 g of Omega 3.

* Made of all natural, plant based ingredients,Vega has 50% of the recommended daily intake of vitamins and minerals per serving.

I have tried the natural, chocolate and berry flavors however Vega's new Vanilla Chai is honestly my favorite of them all. The flavor is almost like that of a baked vanilla cinnamon cake. The only con I found was the product was slightly grainy when mixed with water alone. This was not an issue when I blended it with fresh bananas or fruits.

I definitely recommend giving the new Vanilla Chai a try. Sample sized packets can be found at most health food stores. Visit Sequel Naturals for a list of retailers.

Thank you to Sequel Naturals for providing Vega's Vanilla Chai for review!

Book Review & Giveaway: Mommy Breastfeeds My Baby Brother

|

Although there are many wonderful breastfeeding resources and books out, I have yet to find one geared towards children. Mommy Breastfeeds My Baby Brother is a book which introduces and encourages both mothers and children on the natural and wonderful benefits of breastfeeding.

When I was pregnant with my now 8-month-old daughter, I used various books and videos to get my then 2-year-old daughter familiar with breastfeeding but unfortunately I wasn't able to find anything geared towards children. I really wish I had found this book sooner!

I have read Mommy Breastfeeds My Baby Brother a few times already and found the message and natural approach both simple and easy for children to grasp. I also found that it subtly encourages children who feel "left out" during the "new baby" phase.

I can understand why La Leche League gave this book a wonderful review and personally recommend this book as an addition to your child's library. This would be a wonderful gift for an the child of an expectant or breastfeeding mother!

Istoria House Publishing has been kind enough to offer 1 hardcover copy of Mommy Breastfeeds My Baby Brother to one of our readers.

Amber teething necklaces and a giveaway!

|

I have always been skeptical about Amber teething necklaces. With my first child I remember brushing off the entire idea as nothing but an old wives tale.
This time around, with my second child I did a little more research into the subject and after reading into it further was intrigued.

Baltic amber contains anywhere from 3-8% of succinic acid, a scientifically examined medical substance used in contemporary medicine. The highest content of the acid is found in the amber cortex - the external layer of the stone. Nobel-prize winner Robert Koch (1886), the pioneer of modern bacteriology, proved that succinic acid has a very positive influence on the human body. In the 1930’s and 40’s, European biochemists discovered that succinic acid is an amino acid created naturally in every cell of the body capable of aerobic respiration, participating in the citric acid - or Krebs cycle. This is how carbohydrates, fats, and proteins are metabolized into energy.

Wearing amber may also protect us against the negative influences of electrical equipment like computers, televisions, mobile phones and microwave ovens. Even more amazing about amber is that the chemical properties of the resin, when formed, act as a natural embalming agent with both drying and anti-microbial properties. Ancient Egyptians actually used pine resin as an embalming agent, and doctors in the War, lacking anything else, would sometimes slap tree resin on a wound as a disinfectant and saved lives that way. TimeDesigns
is an Etsy shop run by Dawn. She has been created top quality jewelery for over 12 years. Each necklace is hand strung on 100% all natural pure silk, with a knot between each and every bead. Pure silk is the strongest natural fiber available on the market. It can withstand being soaked and pulled without breaking down or retaining a foul odor.

What I LOVE about her Amber necklaces (besides the gorgeous colors) is that the clasps are magnetic so if your little one pulls at the necklace, or if he/she has a sibling who pulls on the necklace, it will release the magnetic clasps. It is a nice safety feature which was one of the main selling points for me.

The necklaces also provide a good fit to prevent your little one from chewing on the beads (I don't recommend you allow them to play with the necklace as amber is fairly pliable and might break if they crunch down on the beads).

I tried one of these beautiful pieces of jewelry out with my 7 month old daughter and dare I say it worked! She is calmer and happier while wearing the necklace and doesn't fuss as much.

Dawn has been kind enough to give one of our readers a chance to win one of her beautiful Amber necklaces in Cognac. Please keep in mind that your child doesn't have to be teething in order to enjoy this. My 3 year old loved her sister's so much, she wants one of her own!

Sequel Natural's Vega Whole Food Smoothie Infusion Review

|

My husband and I have been using Vega's Whole food Health optimizer for the last couple of years for our post workout protein boost but never had the chance to try out their smoothie infusion.

I was excited to be given the opportunity recently to try out Sequel Natural's Vega Whole Foods Smoothie Infusion. It is an all in one powder that you use in addition to your favorite smoothie recipe. The powder is packed full of protein, fiber, Omega 3s and green foods.

Upon receiving the smoothie samples, I was immediately impressed with the list of ingredients as it is not only full of whole foods but is  free of common allergens such as corn, dairy, gluten, soy, wheat and yeast.

Ingredients: Yellow pea protein,
organic hemp protein, organic sprouted flax seeds,
organic brown rice protein, organic green food blend (spirulina,
organic wheat grass, organic alfalfa grass, organic
barley grass, organic spinach, organic sprouted
broccoli, organic kale, organic kelp, organic
dulse), inulin (from chicory root), natural fl avors,
xanthan gum.

The nutritional facts on the back of the package showed some impressive numbers. 1 serving of Vega will provide you with 14 grams of protein, 4.5 grams of fat, 1 gram of sugar, 30% of the recommended daily intake of iron and 120 calories. Not bad!

Using this product, I made a smoothie using the following:

1/4 cup (1 serving) or Vega
1 cup water
1 cup orange juice
1 banana
1/4 cup frozen blueberries
1/4 cup mixed frozen berries
1/4 cup fresh strawberries
1/2 tsp vanilla extract

My 3 year old daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The taste was mild and pleasant. I would recommend using a mix of flavorful fruits if you are sensitive to anything that tastes a little "green".  Its a wonderful, quick way to provide a nutrient dense breakfast or snack for your family.

An alternative to plastic water bottles

|

Worldwide we drink 30 billion bottles of water every single year. That equals to 2.7 million TONS of plastic, enough to go around the world over 150 times! 80% of these bottles end up in the garbage or landfill sites. Buried water bottles take up to 1000 years to biodegrade. Its time to make a change!

Plastic water bottles have been in the press quite a bit lately for many reasons. After a four year study, the Natural Resources Defence Council (NRDC) found plenty of bacteria and chemicals in bottled water. As there are currently no regulations in place for bottled water it's difficult to say what is really in your water.

A 1997 United Nations report concluded that bottled water has no nutritional advantage over tap water, yet many people think otherwise.

There is also the danger of leaching plastic chemicals into your water.

The following plastics are considered the worst in terms of leaching. If you are in doubt, check the bottom of your plastic bottle and look for the little triangle. There is almost always a number embossed or printed in the middle.

* #1 PET/PETE (polyethylene terephthalate): Made for one time use, these bottles should be avoided since they more than likely leach the heavy metal antimony and the hormone disrupting chemical BPA. Don't reuse these bottles and don't purchase if they are over six months old.

* #3 PVC (polyvinyl chloride): Known to leach two toxic chemicals, DEHP (di-2-ehtylhexyl phthalate) and bispehonal-A that are both known endocrine and hormone disruptors, this is the most common plastic used in water bottles, baby bottles and cooking oil.

* #6 PS (polystyrene): Known to leach styrene, a carcinogen that causes headaches, fatigue, dizziness, confusion, drowsiness, this plastic is most commonly used in disposable coffee cups and take out containers.

* #7 PC/PLA: Polycarbonate: Since this plastic is made with BPA, it's going to leach and is probably the worst plastic to use. Unfortunately it's found in baby bottles, reusable water bottles, 5-gallon jugs (used for the office water cooler) and food-storage containers.

If it is a #2 HDPE (high density polyethylene), a #4 LDPE (low density polyethylene), or a #5 PP (polypropylene), your bottle is fine. The type of plastic bottle in which water is usually sold is usually a #1, and is only recommended for one time use. Do not refill it. Better to use a reusable water bottle, and fill it with your own filtered water from home and keep these single-use bottles out of the landfill.

Klean Kanteen is among one of the various alternatives to bottled water. My daughter loves the children's sized kanteen and we bring the larger one with us on outings. There are insulator totes such as NY tote which are great for keeping drinks cold. They also prevent the bottles from"sweating" in hot weather. I like how I can clip the NY tote on the handle of my stroller while out for a walk. They are excellent!

Mom Knows Best is a new found favorite of mine and they are Canadian! Their goal is to provide safe and natural products for your kids and family. Take a look at their products including Bornfree BPA free baby bottles, stainless steel bottles and containers, wooden, toxic free toys, certified organic cotton mattress and sheets and many more.

Dairy free ice cream!

|

I received a Cuisinart ice cream maker quite some time ago. As it was during the winter season I didn't really get a chance to try it out. Yesterday I remedied that :).

Vice cream is an excellent book featuring dairy and soy free, ice cream recipes. I made the almond flavored one and it turned out fabulous!

Rich, creamy with the perfect amount of sweetness! Vice cream has a wide variety of various flavors as well as some raw and sorbet versions. I highly recommend checking out this book if you are vegan or have dairy allergies!

Jennifer Wolfe's Prenatal Vinyasa Yoga DVD review and Giveaway!

|

I am a firm advocate of yoga before, during and after pregnancy. It helped me get back into shape with my first daughter as well as fix some back issues I was having due to breastfeeding. The styles of yoga which were most beneficial for me were Vinyasa flow and Ashtanga.

The problem for me however, is that most pregnancy workout or yoga DVDs were too...dull or slow paced for my liking. I wasn't able to find a prenatal yoga/workout DVD which gave me a satisfactory workout until I found Jennifer Wolfe's Prenatal Vinyasa Yoga DVD. I had read rave reviews on Amazon.com and am pleased to say this DVD set lived up to the reviews.

By integrating this yoga practice into my week, I continued to strengthen my body, arms and legs throughout my pregnancy. Overall I felt much stronger, flexible and more relaxed then I had with any other form of exercise. I also found that it made a difference during my labor and during post-partum recovery. It was easier to bounce back, compared to the first time around.

Yoga has been known to:

*Increase Your Energy During Pregnancy
*Alleviate Lower Back Pain
*Prepare your Body for Labor and Delivery
*Connect with your Baby
*Decrease Anxiety and Stress
*Be Fit and Active During and After Pregnancy
*Speed up Postpartum Recovery

This DVD is very well done and never cheesy unlike some others which I have tried. Jennifer has a very calming voice and teaching style which makes you feel comfortable throughout the classes.

Jennifer Wolfe
is a Prenatal and Vinyasa Yoga instructor, Doula, clinical and medical hypnotherapist, childbirth educator, and Reiki master who has studied yoga for the past fourteen years with a variety of instructors including Doug Swenson. She has prepared thousands of pregnant women for childbirth and provided doula support in over 300 births at Mills Peninsula, Sequoia, Kaiser, Stanford, El Camino, Good Samaritan, Valley Care Medical Center, Pleasanton Birth Home, California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC), and UCSF hospitals.

Some reviews:

ShapeYou.com 2007 Gear Awards
Prenatal Vinyasa Yoga "Top Gear of the Year Award"

NEW YORK TIMES

"makes you feel good, even with a big belly,"
"My arms and legs got a workout, and I felt stretched, connected and relaxed."

This Dr. Mommy used this practice for 2 pregnancies DB (San Carlos, CA)
As an MD, I'm often skeptical of the promises a lot of yoga dvds make. Jennifer Wolfe's vinyasa practice exceeds all expectations.

I used this vinyasa practice throughout both of my pregnancies. I became stronger as each pregnancy progressed, so that I was able to achieve my goal of natural childbirth with energy left over.

You will work hard, sweat a lot, and be as prepared for childbirth as you can possibly be. I can't recommend this dvd highly enough!!!

Jennifer has generously offered 1 of our readers her Prenatal Vinyasa Yoga short forms and long forms 2 DVD set! This set includes

Milk Diaper Review and Giveaway!

|

My milk supply has always been over abundant and leaking isn't quite the word I would use when I have a let down! For this reason, Lansinoh disposable breast pads have always been my pad of choice for nursing. They are thin, yet absorb quite a bit. The downside is that of course they are disposable and can get pretty expensive, compared to other nursing pad brands. I have tried many re-usable breast pads, however they never absorb enough and are usually too bulky.

Recently I came across Milk Diapers (isn't it a cute name!). They are re-usable, cloth nursing pads which get softer the more you launder them and DO NOT shrink! These have truly been lifesavers for me. They come in a variety of styles and thicknesses. 4 layer pads with or without lace, 5 layer pads and moisture guard pads which include a layer of terry backed polyurethane laminate. The laminate is porous and thus allows moisture and air to evaporate through. I love the fact that I am helping the environment, saving money and supporting a home-based business.

After testing these pads I preferred the moisture guard for my heavy leaking needs. They are thicker than the 4 layer pads, however conform to the shape of your breast as the rest of the pads do. For women who don't leak as much or are nursing an older infant, the 4 layer pads would definitely be sufficient.

Some information from their website:

* Softly Contoured
* Conforms to changing breast size
* Extra layers where you need it
* Dart supportive to nipple

SPECIAL SELECTION OF FABRICS:

* To offer the best breathable air flow, allowing a normal healthier climate.
* Soft fabrics adjust to changing breast size and cling to the cup of the bra
* Twice pre-shrunk for no awkward surprises.
* 100% Breathable Cottons
* Easy to Wash and Reuse
* No unhealthy Moisture Barrier

ABSORBENCY / SOAKS:

* You bet your baby booties!
* Works WITH the milk leak
* Discreet changes keep your clothes dry

DESIGNED BY A 5-TIME MOTHER:

* Business owner for over 27 years
* Was able to test designs while nursing
* Sensitive lactating breasts require careful attention.
* The designer became very familiar with health recommendations for breastcare.

*Recommended by Health Care Professionals AND moms!

Milk diapers has generously offered to send 1 lucky winner a set of 6, 4 layer milk diapers in either cream or white (your choice). All you have to do to enter the giveaway is leave a comment with your color preference! I will randomly select and announce the winner on April 14th. Tweet about this post, let me know, and you will receive one bonus entry!
