Alicia Silverstone to launch Eco-friendly cosmetic line

Alicia Silverstone has joined forces with Eco Tools and created a line of eco and budget friendly cosmetic brushes and totes. The line is made with natural hemp materials and lined with recycled PET.

The collection will be available later on this year and will include:

A bag and five-piece brush set which includes a finishing brush, angled eye shadow brush, blush brush and lash and brow groomer.
Cosmetics brush bag which also includes a blush brush.
Train case with a zip top and clear removable compartment.
Overnight bag with two removable interior compartments
Cosmetics bag for throwing into a purse.

Human body absorbs 5lbs of chemicals per year through makeup

It is claimed that women who use make-up daily absorb close to 5lbs of chemicals. Some women use as many as 20 different types of beauty products a day while 90% apply makeup beyond its expiry date.

Many women have a dependence on cosmetics and toiletries. This means that 4lbs 6 oz of chemicals are absorbed into the body through the skin.

Some of the synthetic compounds used in these products have been linked to skin irritations, premature aging and cancer.

Richard Bence, a biochemist who has spent three years researching conventional products, said: "We really need to start questioning the products we are putting on our skin and not just assume that the chemicals in them are safe.

"We have no idea what these chemicals do when they are mixed together, the effect could be much greater than the sum of the individual parts." Mr Bence, an advocate of organic beauty products, believes that absorbing chemicals through the skin in more dangerous than swallowing them.

He said: "If lipstick gets into your mouth it is broken down by the enzymes in saliva and in the stomach. But chemicals get straight into your bloodstream, there is no protection."

Warnings over using out-of-date lipstick and mascara have also been issued by the Royal College of Optometrists which believes such items are a "hothouse" for harmful bacteria.

The chemicals under scrutiny are parabens (para-hydroxybenzoic acids) which are preservatives used in products including soap, shampoo, deodorant and baby lotion and SLS.

Sodium lauryl sulphate is used to help create lather in soaps, shampoo, shaving foam, toothpaste and bubble bath and can cause skin irritation.
